Upcoming Nuptials Will Happen

Emphasis on the will. I have not written about this much, even though at the moment it occupies most of my free time. I’ve mentioned before what an incredible procrastinator I am. I think my wedding perfectly exemplifies this. I have been engaged for one and a half years and of that time the amount of it that has been spent planning my wedding is a whopping one week with a measly two months to go. With this much time left it’s all people talk about with me. “Are you excited? When is it? Have you got everything ready? Do you have cold feet?” The last question being, of course, the most annoying, if not intrusive. Despite that, the planning that I have done has got me pretty excited.

We picked out a cake. We made an appointment with Edda’s Cake Bakery before we left for vacation. I hadn’t tried them, but I’d heard some great things from my friend Christine. They made a cake that looked like a couture bag for a friend of hers and apparently, not only was it beautiful, it was also very delicious. So we went and they brought out a tray with a vast array of cake flavors like piña colada and amaretto. We ended up going with Vanilla Rum. It is just incredibly tasty.  We gave them a picture of a cake design we liked and discussed a couple of changes here and there. I was suspecting to pay a lot more than I did. I am predisposed to thinking that weddings are just big giant pains in your pocket, but Edda’s pleasantly surprised me.

We also got the design for our wedding invitations done or mostly done. We had at first planned on designing it ourselves, but with the way things were going we could not really count on us. Pathetic, I know, but we were forced to be brutally honest with ourselves. I searched designs on Etsy for a while and found several contenders. Ultimately I went with Vohandmade and her Twisting Thorn design. I loved its simplicity and cleanliness. I also must mention how incredibly wonderful working with this vendor was. So accommodating, and fast. I loved this experience and would recommend her to anyone. The design is now all done, a little different than the original, but with the same simple and clean look. We just need to find a printer and they should be in the mail in about two weeks.

Other than that, while not as imperative to the wedding, but still pretty damn fun, was building the wedding registry at Target. Still, there is a lot more to go. We haven’t figured out food yet, and we need to find a place to rent tables and chairs from, but it’s all coming together very nicely. O, yes, and I need a wedding dress. I actually did just forget about that for a minute…

On Enjoying the Rest of Our Vacation

I have to say that once the wedding to-dos were over I actually was able to unwind and relax a bit. Not to say that the wedding was no good. I was just sick of driving to them. Staying in one place for a few days was really very nice. We got an opportunity to sleep in, swim a bit in the hotel pool and just be lazy in general. It’s fun to see Jeremy’s family, to see how he interacts with people that have known him his entire life. It’s cute to see that side of him, his role as the older brother. We all got a chance to be a little bit lazy Thursday morning and just enjoy the down time.

In the afternoon, however, Jeremy’s parents insisted we do something so we went Off Roading in JJ’s dad’s Jeep at the Moab Sand Flats. What they said to me was, “Would you like to go for a Jeep drive?” I figured it would be a regular drive, but with mountains involved. It was more like driving up very steep rocks, hanging perilously off ledges and lurching down incredibly bumpy trails. It was painful. The constant and sudden stopping cinched my seatbelt tighter and tighter across my hips until I couldn’t even tell my torso and legs were attached to each other. Still, it was also a lot of fun.

One of the more amazing things about Utah are the mountains. Going up higher and higher and being able to witness entire landscapes so easily is really breathtaking. You don’t experience that in Miami, so every time I go it’s a little bit thrilling.

The day after that was to be our last in Moab and Jeremy’s parents insisted some more that I took in the sites since we were technically on vacation. We went and saw some petroglyphs, which was very cool. It’s amazing to see something that old. There was some graffiti from the 1800′s which really impressed me.

Then we went to Arches National Park, which was beautiful, albeit incredibly tiring. I am not an outdoorsy girl, and Jeremy and his family are just insanely thin and lithe monsters that naturally take to hiking and climbing and what not. Getting up those mountains was a pain and half, but it was nice to see the Arches up close.

After Friday we were on the road again. We went to a family reunion and saw Ponyo in Salt Lake on Sunday before our flight back home.  Despite 9 days of no work, it was still a major drag going back the next day.

Excuse Me As I Vomit Through The Window

Mountains are only so interesting after the first time.

Mountains are only so interesting after the first time.

I think the hardest part about making these yearly trips to see Jeremy’s family is the amount of time spent in airplanes and cars. We usually fly into SLC, which is fine, great in fact. SLC is cool, cooler than I thought it would be. We’re never there very long, though. Jeremy’s family all live in Star Valley, Wyoming and the only reason we fly into SLC is because it’s the most convenient airport. That means that after a seven-hour flight, including delays, we immediately pack up for a four to five-hour drive. It’s funny how incredibly used to this they are too.

Their ability to sit still, reading or playing games is uncanny. Meanwhile, I sit with my finger poised on the window button, ready to hurl at every weaving and winding road through the mountains.  I have never been good with long car drives, the boredom sets in quick and there’s no way for me to read or play games without getting intense headaches and nausea. I am currently on the road to Moab, Utah and even as I type this, into our third hour of driving, I’m burping in vain to try and settle the nausea and squinting at the screen to try and minimize the dizziness.  It’s suicide, but I just couldn’t stand to stare at any more flat brown scenery.

On The Road to Moab

After the first day of traveling, we can usually chill out for a bit. However, this trip, Jeremy’s younger sister was to be married. We’ve driven to Wyoming, running errands along the way on Saturday. Finished center pieces and what not Sunday, then packed up and drove to SLC Monday, again running errands along the way. She had the ceremony and luncheon Tuesday, and we are now headed to Moab, another city four hours away, for a reception.  I am tired. As much as I complain about Miami’s lack of culture, I do appreciate the fact that everything is a nice 30 minutes away. Anything farther away than that just isn’t worth driving to.

Piquing My Interests

Work has been incredibly busy. Every year we give backpacks to children that participate in the After School and Summer Camp programs. It’s cool that we do that, but the assembly, which involves unpacking the back packs, packing them with an assortment of supplies, which involves a whole lot of breaking open boxes and heavy lifting, all falls on me. This year it was about 200 backpacks and it’s just been grueling. I come home and I literally just want to sleep. All my free time has been spent getting some much-needed rest.

This upcoming week we’ll also be working on registrations for the upcoming school year and that’s pretty non-stop. In combination with getting ready for Jeremy’s sister’s wedding and our trip up to Utah on the 8th and trying to register myself for school in the Fall, it really just does feel non-stop. I’ve been meaning to write up a little something about what’s caught my attention outside of work, but will most likely keep this relatively short.

True Blood

Recently began watching this and am a little hooked. I was a little skeptical, but after hearing a couple of good things about it decided to give a shot. Suffice to say that after getting the second disk on Netflix, had to run out to MovieStop and grab the whole season so I could keep watching. I am officially all caught up, which includes tonight’s episode. Glad I gave this a chance and I can’t hardly wait to watch the rest.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels

Sadly I also gave the books by Charlaine Harris a chance and I have to say it was a little disappointing. I’ve only read the first so far, but it reads a little too much like a romance novel. Am working on the second, just because the shows so good I feel I should give it a shot. The books lack a certain darkness and edginess present in the show which really makes all the difference.

Fables

I recently got the third volume of Bill Willingham’s Fable’s and have read about half of it today. It’s just as good as the other’s. Incredibly well written and beautifully drawn, they’re a great way to get someone not so keen on comics into comic books. I’ve already ordered the fourth volume and am also really looking forward to reading the Peter and Max novelization.

So yes, that’s just a little glimpse into what’s keeping me preoccupied. I’m also working on my own fiction. Hopefully while I’m on vacation I have more time to keep this updated. There’s a lot I want to do that I haven’t gotten around to.
